Synopsis

In France, suspects can only be held in police custody for 48 hours before being charged or released. French detectives have two days to gather conclusive proof or get a confession, in a full-on race against the clock. 48 Hours looks back at a successfully solved crime, using official reports, investigation files, interviews with key protagonists and reenactments to plunge viewers into the heart of a 48-hour custodial investigation. We slip behind the closed doors of a never-seen world… where fates are decided.

SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 1 : JEAN-YVES MOREL'S CUSTODY

On July 2, 1997, John Griffin reported his 23-year-old daughter Elisabeth missing in Normandy. Her car was found on the edge of a housing estate in Lillebonne. In her handbag: two small slips of paper. One with the telephone number of a certain Jean-Yves Morel, the other scrawled: “Fred, 24, 10 a.m.”. After three months of investigation, only one name remained, that of Jean-Yves Morel, an ordinary 33-year-old married father. On October 9, 1997, he was summoned to the gendarmerie at 9am. SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 2 : JEAN-STÉPHANE SAIZELET AND NADÈGE WIKTORSKA'S CUSTODY

July 1995. An anonymous call informs the police that the death of a man, Jean-Ber- nard Wiktorska, declared accidental, is in fact murder. He had been killed by his wife and her lover. The police recovered the body, just before it was to be cremated. The autopsy confirms homicide. The police arrested the couple denounced by the mysterious informant, as well as the woman whose house they had been discovered in. However, during the arrest, the man claims to be Jean-Bernard Wiktorska, thus giving away the identity of the dead man. They were transferred to the Versailles criminal brigade at 1:15pm on July 20, 1995. Their were taken into custody …

SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 3 : CHRISTIAN VAN GELOVEN'S CUSTODY

On October 19, 1991, two 10-year-old girls were reported missing in Elne. The very next day, searches and search parties were organized. In the days that followed, the search continued and the unthinkable became probable: Ingrid and Muriel had been abducted. Emotions ran high nationwide. The investigators had only one clue: a witness reported seeing a man in a white car. Later, by telephone, someone gave the name of a man, already convicted of paedophile acts, who was in the area at the time. The hypothesis seemed serious. We had to act quickly, as the girls might still be alive. The suspect, Christian Van Geloven, was arrested 800 km from Elne and taken to a gendarmerie office. His was taken into custody …

SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 4 : ADRIANO ARAUJO DA SILVA'S CUSTODY

On January 2, 2001, in Les Mureaux, two young boys discovered a sleeping bag containing the bloodied body of a young woman. The body was quickly identified. It was Jeannette O’Keefe, a 28-year-old Australian student. With no witnesses or clues, the case remained unsolved for eight years, until new evidence led to the identification of a suspect. Adriano Araujo Da Silva was arrested on February 17, 2009, at 6:30 a.m. at his partner’s home and transferred to the Versailles crime squad. He was taken into custody…

SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 5 : JOSIANE LE COUVIOUR AND LOÏC DUGUÉ'S CUSTODY

In April 2009, in Grand-Champ, Brittany, a burglary went awry at the Le Couviour retirement property. Anne-Marie, aged 75, suffocated to death. Eugène, 90, escaped unharmed. As for the loot, it was practically nothing, even though the house contained many valuable objects. Two days later, an anonymous phone call denounces one of the burglars. He was arrested and confessed that he had acted on a pre-arranged contract – seeing a murder masquerading as a burglary. Who ordered the robbery? One of the Le Couviour couple’s daughters-in-law. The investigation turned to Josiane, the wife of Eugène Le Couviour’s eldest son. Three days after the burglary, she was arrested at her home. It was 5pm at the Lorient gendarmerie. She was taken into custody…

SYNOPSIS / EPISODE 6 : THE BRUYAS COUPLE'S CUSTODY

On May 30, 1995, in Saint-Andéol-le-Château, a fire ravaged the Bébien family home. In the rubble, four bodies were found: the parents and two of their children. All had died before the fire, shot at point-blank range by the same weapon. The gendarmes were soon convinced that the quadruple murder had been committed by someone close to the family. The only people to benefit from this tragedy were Samantha, the eldest daughter and sole heiress, and Éric Bruyas, her husband. At dawn on June 14th, the young couple were arrested at their home and taken to the Givors police station. At 6:30 am, they were taken into custody…
